Greetings! My name is Melissa Matz and welcome to Blooming Betties!
I love flowers. I love getting my hands in the dirt and the miracle of putting a tiny seed in the ground to grow something so ornate you can’t take your eyes away from, unless it’s to sink your nose into. I enjoy wracking my brain over garden plans and laying in bed at night trying to imagine what it all will look like. I love early summer mornings with coffee and clippers mulling over my flower beds for that perfect color combination. I love dorking out with other constant gardeners over what they need to get done or how to combat bind weed. I’m blown away by what flowers do for our world and our spirits and I’m so grateful that my grandma did too.
Betty Harms was a beautiful soul inside and out. Ornery and one of the hardest workers you’ve ever met, some of my fondest memories were with her in the garden and she spared me no slack on duties. Anyone who lived in Haxtun at the time knew about her garden. I’d mow, weed, trim, hack, dig, dump, shove, yank, you name it whatever she decided she needed done. Those were some of the best days of my life and I miss her so much. Gardening is a way I still spend time with her.

Farming has been a way of life for my family for generations. Growing up in the ag country of Northeastern Colorado, I loved being a farm kid. From an early age I’ve spent summers running the tractor on our farm, Harms Sunny Acres. Fast forward a WHOLE bunch of years and I found myself a new mom with an opportunity to give a dream a chance. I planted seeds just like my grandma showed me and grew my first cutting garden. I spent weeks trying to figure out if the flowers I grew were “quality” enough. I sold my first few arrangements at my mother-in-law’s garage sale. I made a few more for the next day, posted them on social media, and they sold before I could get them to her sale. Later that summer a friend trusted me enough to let me grow the flowers for her wedding. It was gorgeous. I was sold on becoming a flower farmer.
So here I am, everyday I feel like I’m just beginning at something I’ve been working my whole life to do without knowing it. I’m here because I love it and I love working towards living the life I’ve imaged for me and my family. I’m honored and grateful that flowers and my community can be a part of that journey. I desperately hope that the flowers and flora grown on my tiny plot of land can bring BIG joy to those around me. My flowers are my grandma’s flowers. They are YOUR grandma’s flowers. It means so much to me that I can offer you a piece of my happy place.
